When a tooth is structurally unsound, such as in the case of a fracture, chip, or large cavity, Dr. Graziano may recommend a custom, permanent crown. Serving as a cap to damaged teeth, crowns fit comfortably and function like a strong, healthy tooth.
In some cases, crowns can correct functional issues. Worn teeth can contribute to jaw misalignment, resulting in TMJ disorder and pain. Bruxism (teeth grinding) often causes teeth surfaces to wear down. In this case, Dr. Graziano may use crowns to build up the bite and restore proper tooth size and shape. Called equilibration, this procedure is often prescribed to relieve TMJ disorder. After restoring the teeth, a nightguard should be worn to eliminate the potential of experiencing the same problem again.

All-ceramic crowns are recommended to keep your smile white and natural, but your situation may call for an alternative, such as precious metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations. Dr. Graziano will determine which material will be best for your damaged tooth. Generally, porcelain crowns work well on front teeth, and they look natural. Back teeth incur intense pressure with biting and chewing, so metal or partially metal crowns may be required.
